Canada Tourist Visa
An Australian Tourist Visa (subclass 600) is a short-term visitor visa that allows non-immigrants to visit Australia for tourism or to see family. Indian citizens (and all nationals except Australian or New Zealand citizens) must obtain a visa before travel. This visa typically permits stays up to 3 months per visit, though in certain cases up to 6 or 12 months might be granted. Visas are often multiple-entry and can be valid for several years (commonly 3 years for Indian applicants) at the discretion of Australian authorities.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for a Canada visitor visa, you must meet the basic requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Key criteria include:
- Valid Travel Document: You must have a valid Indian passport that will remain valid for the duration of your trip.
- Good Health: You should be in good health. A medical examination may be required for long stays or certain conditions.
- No Criminal Record: You must have no serious criminal convictions or immigration violations. Police clearance certificates may be requested if needed.
- Sufficient Funds: You need to show proof of financial ability to cover your travel costs in Canada (flight, accommodation, meals, etc.) for the duration of your stay. The amount required depends on your length of stay and plans. Generally, showing bank balance and income that convincingly cover your trip is necessary.
- Ties to Home Country: You must convince the visa officer that you will return to India after your visit. Strong ties such as a stable job, property, family commitments, or enrollment in an educational program in India will support your case.
- Travel Purpose: You should have a genuine reason for tourism (e.g. sightseeing, visiting family). If you have an invitation from a Canadian resident (family/friend), it strengthens family-visit cases but is not mandatory for tourism.
- Other Requirements: You may need to undergo a medical exam (if planning to stay long or from certain countries) and/or provide a letter of invitation from a relative in Canada (if visiting them). Moreover, you must not be inadmissible to Canada on grounds such as security or health (e.g. having a contagious disease can be a concern).
Required Documents:
Gather the following documents for a Canada tourist visa application (ensure all documents are in English or French, or accompanied by certified translations):
- Application Forms: Fill out the Visitor Visa application form (IMM 5257) and Family Information form (IMM 5645). If applying online, you’ll fill these on the IRCC portal; on paper, you’ll need to download and complete them.
- Passport: Original valid passport and copies of all pages with visas or stamps. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry. Include any old passports to show past travel history. If you have a valid US visa, include a copy as it can sometimes be seen positively.
- Photographs: Recent passport-size photographs as per Canada visa specifications (typically 35mm x 45mm with white background). If applying offline, two prints are required; online, you will upload a digital photo.
- Proof of Travel History: Copies of entry and exit stamps from previous travel (all countries visited), visas from other nations (especially Schengen, US, UK if you have them), and any previous Canada visas. A strong travel history can support your application.
- Cover Letter (Purpose of Visit): It’s often useful to write a cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip, itinerary, dates, who you are traveling with, and who will bear the costs. While not always listed as required, a cover letter can tie your application together and demonstrate your planning.
- Trip Itinerary & Accommodation: Detailed day-by-day itinerary of your travel plan. Include hotel booking confirmations or an invitation letter if staying with someone in Canada. Also provide a round-trip flight reservation or booking showing your intended arrival and departure (you don’t need to buy tickets until visa approval – a reservation or dummy booking is enough).
- Financial Documents: Proof of sufficient funds for your trip:
- Bank statements for the last 6 months showing consistent balance and transactions.
- Income Tax Returns or Form 16 for the last 3 years.
- Salary slips or employment letters if you are employed, or business income proof if self-employed.
- Proof of assets like fixed deposits, property ownership papers, or investments (optional but helpful, to show deeper financial stability).
- Employment Proof: If employed, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or leave approval letter from your employer stating your position, salary, and that you are on approved leave for the trip. If you are a student, a letter from your institution. If self-employed, provide business registration documents and a brief business profile. These establish your occupational ties to India.
- Identification: Copy of your Aadhaar Card and/or PAN Card as additional identity proof (often recommended by consultancies).
- Invitation Letter: If you are visiting relatives or friends in Canada, get a formal invitation letter from your host. The letter should include information about your host (full name, status in Canada, address), invite you for a specified period, and indicate who will sponsor your trip expenses. Accompany this with proof of your host’s status (copy of their passport or PR card), their financial documents (like pay stubs or bank statements) and proof of relationship (if a relative).
- Additional Docs: Any other documents relevant to your application (marriage certificate if traveling with spouse and want to show combined finances, birth certificates if traveling with children, etc.). If you’ve had any visa refusals in the past, it’s good to include refusal letters/explanations.
Application Process:
Indian citizens can apply for a Canada Tourist Visa through two main pathways: online via the IRCC portal or offline via VFS Global visa application centers.
01
Online Application (IRCC Portal):
Create an account on the IRCC online application portal and complete the visitor visa application form electronically. You’ll need an invitation code to sign up (the IRCC site guides you through this). Fill in all required details and upload digital copies of your documents. After filling the forms, the system will generate a personalized document checklist where you will upload the scanned documents. Pay the visa fee (and biometric fee, if applicable) online using a credit card. Once submitted, you will get a notification to give biometrics.
02
Offline Application (through VFS Global):
If you prefer, you can apply through VFS Visa Application Centres. First, complete the application forms (IMM5257 and others) on your computer and print them out, or obtain paper forms from VFS. Assemble all your documents as per the checklist. Create an account on the VFS website and schedule an appointment for document submission and biometrics. On the appointment day, visit the VFS center with your documents, forms, passport, photographs, and fees. The VFS staff will review your application, accept the fees, and collect your biometric fingerprints and photo. They will then forward your application to the Canadian High Commission/Consulate for processing.
03
Biometrics:
Most Indian applicants between ages 14-79 must provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) for Canada visa. This is done at the Visa Application Center (VAC) after you submit the application. If you applied online, you’ll get a biometric instruction letter to take to the VAC; if you applied via VFS in person, you’ll do it during the appointment. Biometrics are generally valid for 10 years, so if you provided biometrics for a Canadian visa in the last 10 years, you might be exempt for a new application.
04
Tracking & Decision:
After submission, you can track your application through the IRCC online account or via VFS tracking tool. Processing times are currently long for Canadian visitor visas, often around 80 to 100 working days (3-4 months), so apply well ahead of your travel date. If the visa is approved, IRCC will ask you to send in your passport for stamping (if you applied online, you’ll get a request letter; if via VFS, they keep your passport or call you to submit it later). You can submit your passport to VFS which will courier it to the embassy for the visa sticker issuance. Once the visa is stamped, you’ll get your passport back via VFS or courier. If refused, you’ll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons.
Visa Processing Time:
Approximately 80–100 working days for Indian applicants (this is about 4 months). The processing time can vary depending on the volume of applications and the specifics of your case. During peak travel seasons or due to backlogs, it might even extend beyond this range. It’s highly recommended to apply at least 3-4 months in advance. (Note: If you have an urgent travel need, you may try for priority processing by paying extra, but this option is not always available for visitor visas.)
Visa Validity & Stay Duration:
A Canadian visitor visa can be granted for a short or long validity. Typically, Canada issues multiple-entry visas that remain valid for up to 10 years or until one month before your passport expires (whichever comes first). This means you can travel to Canada multiple times without reapplying, as long as the visa is valid. However, each stay in Canada is usually limited to 6 months per entry. The exact allowed stay is determined by the border officer when you enter Canada – most often they’ll allow the default 6 months and stamp your passport accordingly. If you need to stay longer than 6 months in one go, you must apply for an extension from within Canada before the 6 months end.
