UK Tourist Visa (Standard Visitor Visa)
If you plan to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, family visit, or short-term leisure, you will need the UK Standard Visitor Visa (commonly called the UK Tourist Visa). The UK has discontinued separate categories like family visitor or tourist visas – all fall under the Standard Visitor Visa. This visa allows Indians to travel anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland for up to 6 months per visit. Indian citizens must apply in advance; there is no visa on arrival for the UK. The Standard Visitor Visa is typically valid for a 6-month stay. Frequent travelers may even apply for long-term visitor visas valid 2, 5, or 10 years, but these still only allow maximum 6 months per visit.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for a UK tourist visa, Indian applicants must satisfy the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requirements:
- Valid Passport: You must have a valid passport (with at least 6 months validity recommended and some blank pages for visa stamps) to enter the UK.
- Genuine Visitor: You should intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit. UKVI will assess if you are a genuine visitor. You must not intend to live in the UK for extended periods through frequent visits or make the UK your main home. Essentially, the visa is for a temporary stay only.
- Financial Capability: You must have enough money to support yourself (and any dependents with you) during the trip without accessing public funds. This includes being able to pay for accommodation, food, local travel, and your return flight. You may be asked for proof like bank statements or income proof to show you can afford the trip. Additionally, you should be able to pay for your return or onward journey ticket.
- Purpose of Visit: Your activities in the UK must fall under permitted activities for visitors – tourism, visiting family/friends, certain business meetings, short courses (under 6 months), or attending events. You cannot work (paid or unpaid) on a tourist visa, nor can you study long-term or marry (unless you get a separate marriage visitor visa). If you plan to do something specific like short-term study or medical treatment, you might need to meet additional criteria (e.g. proof of course enrollment or medical appointment).
- No Intent to Violate Visa Conditions: You must not intend to work or access public benefits in the UK, and you should not have a history of overstaying or violating conditions on previous UK visas.
- Additional: If you are visiting for certain special reasons (such as medical treatment or academic research for a short time), there could be additional requirements (for example, medical letters, or academic eligibility proof). But for general tourists, the above covers most criteria.
Required Documents:
When applying for a UK Standard Visitor Visa, prepare a file of supporting documents. Key documents include:
- Passport: Your original passport (and any old passports) covering your travel history. The passport must be valid for the duration of your stay and have at least one or two blank pages. Include copies of the passport’s bio-data page and any visas/stamps.
- Photographs: UK visa applications now typically require you to upload a digital photograph and you will also be photographed at the Visa Application Centre. Check the UKVI photo guidelines (generally 45mm x 35mm, clear background) if a physical photo is needed for any reason.
- UK Visa Application Form: The form is completed online on the official GOV.UK website. Once you finish, you should print the form or at least the final summary and appointment confirmation to bring to your biometrics appointment.
- Proof of Accommodation: Documents showing where you will stay in the UK. This can be hotel booking confirmations, or if staying with a relative/friend, an invitation letter from them along with evidence of their accommodation (like a copy of their utility bill or rental contract).
- Travel Booking: It’s recommended to provide a round-trip flight reservation or itinerary. (Booking tickets prior to visa approval is not mandatory, but a reservation or tentative flight itinerary helps prove your travel plans.)
- Cover Letter (Optional but Advised): A letter that explains the purpose of your visit, your travel plan, dates, who is traveling with you, and a brief explanation of your ties to India (employment, family) which ensure you will return. This is your chance to make a case in your own words that you are a genuine visitor.
- Financial Documents: These are critical. Include:
- Bank Statements for the last 6 months, showing your income and savings. Sufficient balance to cover your trip is important – there is no fixed amount, but it should comfortably cover your estimated expenses.
- Income proof: Salary slips for last 3-6 months, Income Tax Returns/Form-16 for last 3 years, or other proof of regular income.
- If someone else is funding your trip (a sponsor, such as a parent or spouse), include a letter from the sponsor and their financial documents. However, even with a sponsor, you should show some financial capacity of your own if possible.
- Proof of Investments/Assets: Fixed deposit receipts, property documents, share/investment portfolios, etc., to show wider financial stability (optional, but strengthens your case).
- Employment and Ties Documents:
- Employer NOC: A letter from your employer on company letterhead, stating your position, salary, start date, and approving your leave for the specific travel dates. This letter should affirm that you will return to your job after the holiday.
- If you are a government employee or in certain professions, a leave sanction letter or NOC is crucial.
- Self-employed: Provide your business registration license, company financial statements, and a letter describing your business.
- Students: A letter from your school/college confirming enrollment and leave.
- Retired: Proof of retirement (pension book, retirement certificate) and pension statements.
- Property or Family Ties: If applicable, documents showing property ownership in India, or dependent family members who are not traveling with you (e.g., a marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates) to further demonstrate your strong ties home.
- Civil Documents: Birth certificate (especially for minors) and, if a minor is traveling, additional documents: a consent letter from both parents/guardians, and copies of parents’ passports. For adults, marriage certificates can be included if your spouse is not accompanying, to show family connection.
- Travel History: If you have old passports with visas (for UK, US, Schengen, etc.), include copies. A good travel history can support your application.
- Miscellaneous: Any document that supports the purpose of your visit. For example, if going for a short course (under 6 months allowed on visitor visa), include the course acceptance letter. If attending a wedding or event, include the invitation. If part of an official tour or group travel, include relevant letters.
Remember, all documents must be in English (or Welsh) or accompanied by certified translations. Organize your documents neatly as per the checklist provided during the online application process.
Application Process:
The UK tourist visa application process for Indians is as follows:
01
Online Application:
Complete the online visa application form on the UK government website (Access UK). You’ll create an account, fill in personal details, travel plans, answer visa eligibility questions, and upload certain documents digitally. At the end of the form, you pay the visa fee (standard 6-month visa costs around GBP £115) and book an appointment for biometrics at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre in India. Typically, you can choose an appointment date/time at your nearest city (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc.).
02
Pay Healthcare Surcharge:
(Note: For tourist visas, the Immigration Health Surcharge is not applicable, since it’s only for visas longer than 6 months. So you skip this in a standard visitor visa.)
03
Biometrics Appointment:
Attend your VFS appointment for biometrics. Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and all supporting documents. At the VFS center, they will collect your fingerprints and photograph. You will submit your passport and supporting documents. Nowadays, the UK visa system uses self-upload for documents via the online portal in many cases; however, many applicants opt for VFS’s document scanning service (sometimes for an extra fee) at the center. Ensure all your documents are either uploaded online before the appointment or carried in print so VFS can scan them into the system. There is usually no interview with a visa officer; the process is just document submission and biometrics. (In rare cases, you might be called for an interview or asked for additional information by the High Commission, but this is not common for tourist visas.)
04
Processing:
After biometrics, your application will be sent to UK Visas and Immigration for decision. You can track the status via VFS tracking. Standard processing takes about 15 working days, but it can vary. There are options to purchase priority processing (5 working days) or super-priority (24 hours) at extra cost, if you need faster decision.
05
Decision and Passport Return:
Once a decision is made, you will be notified to pick up your passport from the VFS center or have it couriered to you (depending on the option you chose). If approved, the visa vignette (sticker) will be on a passport page. For a 6-month visa, the vignette will show an issue date and a “Valid Until” date 6 months later (that’s the period in which you can travel to the UK) and typically “Multi” for multiple entry. The duration of stay (usually 180 days max) is not printed but is standard for visitor rules. If refused, you’ll get a refusal letter with reasons.
Visa Processing Time:
The standard processing time for a UK visitor visa from India is about 3 to 6 weeks. In general, 15–25 calendar days is typical for many cases. However, times can fluctuate: if you apply during a peak period or there are additional background checks needed, it could take longer. UKVI recommends applying up to 3 months in advance of your intended travel date (you cannot apply earlier than 3 months before). If you need a faster outcome, consider purchasing the priority service to get a decision in 5 working days (subject to availability).
Visa Validity & Stay Duration:
The Standard Visitor Visa is usually issued for 6 months validity on a single-entry or multiple-entry basis. This means you can enter the UK anytime within those 6 months and stay up to 6 months total. If you leave and re-enter within the validity, you’re still bound by the total 6-month limit and must not be using visits to live in the UK long-term. For travelers who plan to visit the UK frequently, the UK offers long-term visitor visas valid for 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years. Indian travelers often avail the 2 or 5-year visa if they go often. These long-term visas allow multiple entries, but each visit must not exceed 6 months and you shouldn’t spend more than 6 months in a 12-month period in the UK. The decision to grant a long-term visa depends on your travel history and reason; you usually must demonstrate a need for frequent travel. Otherwise, for one-off tourism, the 6-month visa suffices.
