USA Tourist Visa (B2 Visitor Visa)
Traveling to the United States for tourism, family visits, or leisure requires a USA Tourist Visa, usually under the B-2 category (often combined with B-1 for business visitors as a B1/B2 visa). The U.S. does not offer visa-on-arrival for Indian citizens, so this visa must be obtained from a U.S. Embassy/Consulate before your trip.
A U.S. tourist visa allows short stays (typically up to 6 months at a time) for sightseeing, visiting relatives, medical treatment, or attending unpaid events. It’s a multiple-entry visa, and for Indians, it is often issued with long validity (up to 10 years), meaning you can travel multiple times without reapplying, though each visit is limited in duration.
Eligibility Criteria:
The U.S. visa process is not point-based, but rather assessed case-by-case. You must generally demonstrate the following:
- Strong Ties to India: The U.S. law presumes every applicant is an “intending immigrant” until proven otherwise. You must show compelling reasons to return to India after your visit – employment, family, business, property, etc.
- Purpose of Visit: You must have a clear, temporary reason for the trip such as tourism, family visit, medical treatment, attending a wedding, etc.
- Financial Capability: You must show sufficient funds to cover your U.S. trip, either through personal resources or from a sponsor. Documents like bank statements, ITRs, and salary slips help demonstrate this.
- Clean Record: You must not have immigration violations or criminal history. Prior overstays or deportations will require strong explanations.
- Valid Passport: Your passport should ideally be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
- No Immigrant Intent: Your overall application and interview responses must assure the officer that your visit is temporary.
- Previous Travel History: Prior successful travel to countries like UK, Canada, Schengen, or Australia is helpful, but not mandatory.
Required Documents:
Though the U.S. visa process involves fewer documents than some others, be ready to show the following if asked:
- DS-160 Confirmation Page: This is your online visa application form – submit and print the barcode page.
- Visa Appointment Confirmation: Proof of scheduled appointment and visa fee payment.
- Valid Passport: Include current and old passports (especially those with past visas/stamps).
- Photographs: 2 passport-sized photos (2x2 inches, U.S. specifications).
- Travel Itinerary: Tentative plan, round-trip tickets, purpose of visit.
- Financial Proof: Last 6 months’ bank statements, ITRs, pay slips, property ownership, etc.
- Employment/Business Proof: Employer letter with leave approval, or business registration docs.
- If Sponsored: Sponsor’s I-134 affidavit of support (optional), bank statements, job letter, passport/visa copy.
- Ties to India: Proof of family, job, business, or property in India.
- Additional (if applicable): Medical records for treatment-related travel, or invitation letters for events.
Application Process:
The UK tourist visa application process for Indians is as follows:
01
Fill DS-160 Form:
Complete the online visa form with accurate personal, travel, and background information.
02
Pay Visa Fee & Schedule Appointments:
Pay the MRV visa fee (around $185) and schedule:
- OFC appointment (fingerprints/photo)
- Consular appointment (visa interview)
03
Attend OFC Appointment:
Provide biometrics (photo + fingerprints).
04
Attend Visa Interview:
Answer questions about your trip and background. Common questions include:
- “Why are you visiting the U.S.?”
- “Who are you traveling with?”
- “What do you do in India?”
- “How long will you stay?”
- “Who will finance your trip?”
If approved, your passport is retained. If denied, you’ll get your passport back immediately with a refusal letter (usually under section 214(b)).
05
Receive Passport & Visa:
Approved visas are returned with a U.S. visa sticker, typically within a week.
Visa Processing Time:
From DS-160 to passport return, the process can take 2–3 weeks depending on appointment availability. The interview decision is often instant. Current appointment wait times in India can be long (several months), so apply early. Emergency appointments may be available under special circumstances.
Visa Validity & Stay Duration:
- Validity: B1/B2 visas for Indian citizens are usually issued for 10 years (multiple entry).
- Stay Duration: Each visit allows a maximum stay of 6 months (as determined at the port of entry). The immigration officer at the U.S. airport decides your stay duration and issues an entry stamp or electronic I-94.
Important Notes:
- Having a 10-year visa doesn’t guarantee entry – you must justify the temporary nature of each visit.
- Repeated long stays (e.g., 6 months every year) might raise red flags.
- Do not overstay – extensions must be filed with USCIS if needed, and must be for valid reasons.
